Book Overview and Order Information

Why didn't more European Jews leave when they still had the chance? Did they fail to recognize the warning signs, or were the choices far more complicated than we understand today?

These questions lie at the heart of When Is It Too Late?, a thought-provoking examination of the years leading up to the Holocaust and the difficult decisions confronting Jewish families as antisemitism, discrimination, and persecution spread across Europe.

Drawing on historical research, survivor testimony, and the experiences of his own mother, a Holocaust survivor from Hungary, Brian Claman explores what European Jews knew, when they knew it, and why so many remained in countries that were becoming increasingly dangerous. He examines the powerful ties of family, home, and community, the uncertainty surrounding an increasingly hostile political environment, and the immigration barriers that prevented many from escaping.

Bringing more than four decades of professional experience in security and risk management to this historical investigation, Claman considers how people recognize threats, interpret warning signs, and make consequential decisions without knowing what the future holds.

The book also examines the renewed concerns about Jewish safety following the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and the subsequent rise in antisemitism, particularly in Canada.

Without equating present circumstances with those of Nazi Europe, Claman asks what lessons history offers about recognizing danger and responding before meaningful choices disappear.

When Is It Too Late? is not simply a book about the Holocaust. It is an examination of human decision-making under uncertainty, the consequences of failing to respond to growing threats, and the responsibilities of individuals, communities, and governments when warning signs begin to emerge.

The central question is as relevant today as it was nearly a century ago: How do we recognize when the time to act is running out?

Foreword by Phil Gurski, former Senior Strategic Analyst, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
